The death of a city

I am currently reading V.S. Naipaul's "India: A Million Mutinies Now". When I first started reading, I thought I knew a lot about what he was describing in the book. And it was true to a large extent. I think I already had a good understanding of what he was describing. But the way he was describing it, was so beautiful. If I had to talk to someone about India, I don't think I would be able to describe it like this.... even though I can talk about all the things that he talks about.

My most favorite part so far is his theory about Calcutta. We all know about the plight of Calcutta.... He explains the state of Calcutta as the death of a city and says "This is what happens when cities die. They don't die with a bang. A city dies when everyone suffers everyday". He goes on to describe this in more detail, but I think you get the gist. Although I agree with this description and wanted to say exactly what he did, I don't think I would have ever described it this way.

Thinking about that paragraph gives me goosebumps every time!!!
