God Grew Tired of Us

Saw this amazing, touching documentary about the Lost Boys of Sudan
Quite a few thoughts rushed through my mind. The first one was about India's independence and partition. Over the years I have had so many conversations and many many arguments about Gandhi, Congress and partition...... Many people said how Gandhi, Nehru were responsible for the riots that are still going on between Hindus and Muslims, how we shouldn't have given all that money to Pakistan and so on. When I saw this movie, that was the first thought that went through my head. When the British decided to leave India, they had no stakes in our country, were tired of the growing unrest and just wanted to get out. They gave us a date when they would be leaving and we had to solve matters before they left. Our leaders had few options. One was to let Jinnah be the prime minister and avoid partition, which Gandhi was ready for but not the Congress (thank God!!). The other option was to keep arguing, not make a decision, not give Pakistan the money or leave things undecided, in which case the British govt, which was acting as an intermediary would have left the country any ways and we would be in the middle of a civil war exactly like Sudan. With no decision made and no government if we were still fighting about partition or not, money or not we would have killed each other just like the Sudanese. And so what the leaders finally did was the best of what they could choose from. It's very easy to pass judgments in hindsight, but very hard to think into the future and make a decision and take responsibility for it. Just to note, I am not a Congress supporter at all....rather I am not into politics at all....But what is right is right!!!

The other thoughts throughout the movie were obviously filled with sympathy and admiration for those boys..... For someone to WALK from Sudan to Ethiopia to Kenya and survive in a refugee camp for 10 years and still have hope is really great... The journey of these boys from a life without electricity in Sudan to driving a car and going to college in US is really a heart warming story. Everybody who needs some motivation should be watching this movie. As I was watching that movie I was thinking, if these guys can laugh and smile soooooo much, others should not be sad at all..... There is no excuse :-)
